Sudanese government has warned of a possible shortage of needed medical and strategic supplies, including food after demonstrators blocked important transit routes for imports.

Protesters in eastern Sudan have been blocking supplies from the main port on the Red Sea coast, Port Sudan, for the past few weeks in order to put pressure on Khartoum to implement a variety of political demands.

They have been protesting what they view as the region’s deteriorating political and economic realities.

According to a statement published by the Sudanese cabinet on Sunday, prohibiting necessary medicine and supplies from being transported is a “crime” against millions of civilians.

The government said the country’s stock of life-saving medicines and intravenous solutions is about to run out, as the closure of the the port and the national road has hindered the arrival of imported shipments.
