Buhari declares June 12 Democracy Day, awards Abiola GCFR and Kingibe, Fawehinmi GCON

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday announced the his administration’s decision to give posthumous award of GCFR to the presumed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 Presidential election in Nigeria, Late Chief MKO Abiola.

A statement personally signed by President Buhari  also said that as from 2019, Nigeria’s Democracy Day will be marked and celebrated every June 12, instead of the current May 29.

The President equally honoured Abiola’s running mate, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe and late Chief Gani Fawehinmi,  with the award of GCON.
