The Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Babayo Akuyam and his deputy, Ahmed Abdullahi, have resigned resigned from their positions.

This is to pave way for the return of the former Speaker, Abubakar Suleiman and his deputy Jamilu Dahiru, back to their positions.

Recall that Suleiman, the immediate past Chairman, Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, and his deputy, Dahiru, were sacked by the Court of Appeal, Abuja, from their positions as members of the Bauchi State House of Assembly representing Ningi Central Constituency and Bauchi Central Constituency respectively.

The Appellate Court declared the elections in the two Constituencies as inconclusive and therefore ordered for reruns in the affected areas.

While Ningi Central Constituency had 10 polling units were the Court ordered for the rerun, Bauchi Central also had 10 polling units.

Similarly, the Court also sacked two members of the Assembly and declared their elections a inconclusive and ordered for a rerun. Those affected are: Dr. Nasiru Ahmad Ala, who represents Madara/Chinade and Yusuf Sa’idu also representing Zungur/Galambi/Miri.

Following their victories at the February 3rd, 2024 rerun elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission, issued them with their certificates of return.

They were subsequently sworn in by the Clerk of the Assembly, Umar Yusuf, who led them to take their oaths of office and allegiance, on February 14th, 2024.

To keep to an agreement reached, the Speaker, Akuyam, who represents Hardawa Constituency and his deputy, Abdullahi represents Dass constituency, announced their resignation during plenary on Wednesday.

Akuyam and his deputy said their move is part of the agreement reached by the lawmakers to step down to Sulaimen and Darihu should they win their rerun elections.

They appreciated their colleagues and other staff of the assembly for the support and cooperation given to them during their stewardship.

Shortly after announcing their resignations, the house immediately re-elected Abubakar Sulaiman and Jamilu Dahiru as Speaker and deputy respectively.

In his acceptance, the reelected speaker, thanked the out gone speaker and his deputy for exhibiting high sense of maturity while discharging their legislative duties.

He pledged his readiness to continue to provide effective legislations that will better the lives of the citizenry.
