Africa: Ghana Carnival Queens finish in top three at Carnival Calabar International

The Ghana Carnival Queens once again demonstrated their ability to get audience to the edge of their seats with a dazzling performance which saw them finishing in the top three at this year’s Carnival Calabar International in Nigeria.

Touted as Africa’s biggest street party, the Calabar Carnival continues to attractive massive crowds from all over Africa and beyond. This year’s was the 13th edition of the carnival and was held under the theme ‘Migration’ which highlighted the challenges and ordeals Africans, especially the youth go through in their bid to seek greener pastures abroad.

The Ghanaian carnival troupe was made up of the Queens who put up a spirited display of drumming and dancing skills. Performances also came from their male counterparts made up of magicians and acrobats.

The Artistic Director of the Ghana Carnival Queens, Nana Kwame Dadzie speaking to the media after the show said, he said the performance of was to showcase the rich African costume and the fact that irrespective of one’s age, they could adorn themselves in them and still look beautiful. He added that, the Ghana Carnival Quuens will up their game to give revelers much more next year.

This year’s international carnival attracted well over 14 countries from all over the world with the Brazil carnival troupe clinching the first position. South Africa and Ghana finished second and third respectively. Other countries that participated in Carnival Calabar this year include Mexico, Kenya, Tanzania, Lithuania, France, Ukraine, and Croatia. The rest are Swaziland, Italy and Ethiopia.

The international edition of the Carnival Calabar was introduced three years ago and comes off the night after the main street fanfare.
