Wimbledon results 2024: Arthur Fils beats injured Hubert Hurkacz to reach round three

Arthur Fils has booked his spot in round three at Wimbledon after seventh seed Hubert Hurkacz retired on match point.

Poland’s Hurkacz went down with an injury while leading 8-7 in a fourth set tie-break but opted to retire after losing the next two points.

Fils, 20, advanced 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 2-6 6-6 (9-8) and will face either Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic or Russian Roman Safiullin next.

The Frenchman is the youngest player to defeat a top-10 opponent in the men’s singles at SW19 since Nick Kyrgios beat Rafael Nadal in 2014.

Elsewhere, Australian Alex de Minaur and France’s Gael Monfils are through after victories over Jaume Munar and Stan Wawrinka respectively.

Ninth seed De Minaur, who reached the quarter-finals at the French Open in May, beat Spain’s Munar 6-2 6-2 7-5 .

Gael Monfils, back at Wimbledon for the first time since 2021, saw off Swiss three-time Grand Slam champion Wawrinka 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 7-6 (7-3).
