VAR overturns Borussia Dortmund penalty decision AFTER Marcel Sabitzer converts spot-kick

Borussia Dortmund have had a penalty decision overturned by VAR after they had converted the spot kick against Borussia Monchengladbach.

Gladbach took on Dortmund at the Borussia-Park on Saturday, with the visitors looking to return to winning ways having lost their previous two encounters.

And the game was marked by one of the strangest VAR incidents yet…

Dortmund were awarded a penalty, which was subsequently converted by Marcel Sabitzer.

However, as the Austrian connected with the goal-bound spot-kick the referee stopped the play for VAR to check whether a penalty should have been given in the first place.

After consulting with VAR the penalty was cancelled and play was resumed.

Fans were quick to react to the situation on social media.

One person said on X, formally Twitter: “Borussia Dortmund had taken and scored the penalty before VAR decided it wasn’t a penalty. Wtf.”

A second wrote: “What in the name of VAR is that in Bundesliga.”

A third said: “Not sure how that even happened.”

Alongside a face palm emoji a fifth person said: “The game is gone man honestly.”

A fifth added: “That’s messed up they should do proper checking before making decisions.”

Dortmund will be hoping to pick up the three points and maintain momentum ahead of their Champions League second leg against Atletico Madrid.

The first leg saw Sebastien Haller net a crucial goal for Dortmund to give them hope despite a 2-1 defeat to the Spanish side.

Haller has now scored 12 goal in his 13 Champions League appearances, with the one on Wednesday his first in the competition for Borussia Dortmund and his first since returning from his cancer diagnosis.
