Samantha Power, the head of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), praised Sudan’s transition during a visit to Khartoum on Sunday, where she reviewed the country’s urgent economic and humanitarian needs with officials.

Sudan has been through a difficult transition since strongman President Omar al-Bashir was deposed in April 2019.

Before her arrival, USAid stated that Western countries wanted to support the civilian-led transitional administration after decades of autocratic leadership.

“My focus on this trip is fully on Sudan’s economic development needs and ongoing humanitarian needs,” she said during a press conference in Sudan’s capital.

According to Power, the US wants to help Sudan “revitalize the economy” and “attract foreign investment.”
She then met with the foreign minister and will meet with additional high-ranking officials before departing on August 3rd.
