University of Ghana holds evening of remembrance for Kofi Annan

The University of Ghana will hold an Evening of Remembrance in honour of Kofi Annan, former Chancellor of the University from 2008 to 2018.

The event comes off on Friday, September 7, 2018 at 5.00 p.m. at the Great Hall.

Mr. Kofi Annan passed away in Bern, Switzerland on Saturday, August 18, 2018.

Tributes will be read by Principal Officers of the University and dignitaries from selected institutions and associations.

“Members of the University community are cordially invited to participate in this ceremony to honour the memory of our former Chancellor,” an appeal on the university’s website stated.

Mr. Annan, who was Chancellor of the University of Ghana from 2008, ended his tenure at the end of July 2018.

At the recent investiture ceremony of Mr. Annan’s successor, President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo described Mr. Kofi Annan as “one of Ghana’s most illustrious sons under whose stewardship the University attained the rank as one of the best universities in West Africa”.

As Chancellor, Mr. Kofi Annan was instrumental in attracting numerous funding sources to the university especially in the areas of agricultural research and ICT development.

The former Chancellor will be remembered as a man of principle and gentle disposition.
