UN Chief flays attacks on peacekeepers in CAR

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, has strongly condemned Wednesday’s attacks in the Central African Republic (CAR) that left a Rwandan peacekeeper dead and another wounded.

The UN said the attacks, by “unidentified armed combatants” near the capital, Bangui, targeted government forces and its peacekeeping mission in the country.

In a statement, Guterres’ spokesman, Mr Stephane Dujarric, quoted him as calling for action by the government to hold the perpetrators accountable.

The UN chief reiterated that attacks against UN peacekeepers might constitute a war crime.

Guterres said he remained “very concerned over continued destabilisation efforts” by armed groups in CAR, calling on all parties to eschew violence and embrace meaningful dialogue.

“He commends the continued engagement of the UN peacekeepers in their efforts to protect civilians and preserve national stability.

“The Secretary-General reiterates the commitment of the UN, working closely with national, regional and international partners, to support the cause of peace in CAR,” the statement said.

Reports say violence has intensified in parts of the country over the Dec. 27 presidential and legislative elections.

Armed groups opposed to the re-election of President Faustin-Archange Touadera, are alleged to be behind the attacks that has reportedly displaced thousands.

Wednesday’s incident occurred in the outskirts of Bangui, and targeted two army brigades, the UN said, citing media reports. (NAN)
