Big 7 Travel put together a list of 192 destinations, and all countries were ranked according to best places to visit, as well as their visual allure and popularity on Instagram.

It’s no surprise, really, considering that Instagram has become vacationers and travellers’ preferred platform when it comes to sharing holiday snaps and trying to make the neighbours jealous.

The winners were chosen “via a comprehensive scoring system that analysed the number of hashtags per destination,” as well as information from Big 7 Travel’s user surveys and votes cast by a panel of travel experts. The site explains:

“These are the places where you’ll find sweeping stretches of beach, ancient monuments, kitsch cocktail bars and more street art than you can possibly imagine.”

South Africa achieved a rating of 80.94%, trailing behind Austalia’s 89.98%, Hong Hong’s 86.99%, Canada’s 82.84% and Indonesia’s 81.10%. A large chunk of our rating is thanks to Cape Town’s natural beauty, clifftop views and turquoise waters.

The top spot for getting a quick Instagram snap in Cape Town is none other than The Diving Board rock on Table Mountain. The hike to the famed spot will take about four to five hours, but it’s well worth the view once you make it to the top.

Other Instagrammable spots in Cape Town include the Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel, the Bo-Kapp with its pastel-hued rainbow houses, and dramatic scenery and hiking trails of Cape Point.
That’s not to say we don’t have any other amazing Instagrammable spots in the country! Other surveys revealed that the Kruger National Park is a favourite amongs tourist, as is the world heritage site, Drakensberg Mountain range.

Johannesburg residents can boast with the colourful Orlando Towers, while Soweto’s hip nightlife, buzzing street eateries and the creative arts scene lights up those Instagram notifications too.

Up north we have the spectacular Blyde River Canyon, which is the “deepest and greenest canyon in the world.” It’s carved out of 2.5km of red sandstone and surrounded by a blanket of greenery beautiful enough to make any Instagram enemy jealous.
