Mohamed al-Faki, one of the most prominent Sudanese politicians detained during a military coup on Oct. 25, has been released a month after his arrest, according to the man.

Last month’s takeover was condemned by Western powers, who withdrew aid to Sudan, which was struggling to recover from a deep economic crisis.

The coup put an end to a military-civilian transitional partnership, sparking weeks of deadly turmoil and protests against the military, which reinstated Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok on Nov. 12 and promised to release all political inmates.

Pro-democracy groups oppose the army’s reinstatement of Hamdok, who have wanted full civilian control since the fall of tyrant Omar al-Bashir and have been outraged by the murders of dozens of protestors since the coup on Oct. 25.

Following the Nov. 12 accord, which placed Hamdok at the head of a yet-to-be-formed government, Faki is the latest of numerous senior politicians to be released.

Following the overthrow of Bashir in 2019, Faki was a member of the civilian coalition that shared power with the military.

He was a member of the country’s head of state, the joint military-civilian Sovereign Council, and the chairman of a committee tasked with overthrowing the Bashir dictatorship.

Wagdi Salih, another committee leader, is still in custody.

Other members of the committee, as well as scores more resistance committee and union activists, were jailed following the coup.

While Hamdok has stated that the agreement also applies to them, it is unclear how many have been released at this time.

In the weeks leading up to the coup, Faki was one of numerous politicians who engaged in a bitter verbal battle with the military.
