After a failed coup attempt, Sudanese paramilitary chief and vice-president of the ruling sovereign council Mohamed Hamdan Daglo blamed politicians, according to state media.
“Politicians are the main cause of coups because they have abandoned the regular people… and are more concerned with vying for power,” Daglo stated, according to the official news agency SUNA.
In his address to troops at a military camp west of Khartoum, the dreaded paramilitary head continued, “This has created disillusionment among residents.”
Sudan’s shaky transitional government claimed Tuesday that a coup attempt involving military officers and people tied to the conflict in Darfur was prevented.
“Supporters of the defunct dictatorship,” said Information Minister Hamza Baloul.
The military claimed that “the majority” of those involved, including 11 army commanders, had been detained.
Since Bashir’s removal, Daglo, the head of the Rapid Support Men, which has been accused of atrocities in Darfur’s western area, has claimed that his forces have blocked three coup attempts.
Sudan is governed by a sovereign council of civilian and military members entrusted with monitoring a transition to complete civilian administration, according to a power-sharing agreement signed in August 2019.
Bashir, a one-time general, came to power on the back of an Islamist-backed military coup in 1989.
Since his ouster, the toppled autocrat has been jailed in Khartoum awaiting trial.
He is also wanted by the International Criminal Court for his pursuit of a deadly scorched-earth campaign against ethnic minority rebels in Darfur.
