South Africa’s leading railway and ports company, Transnet International Holdings, has agreed to supply 110 wagons to the Ghana Railway Company (GRC) Limited by end of 2018.

Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Mr George Ayisi Boateng has told Graphic Online that the move is part of a new long-term partnership between Ghana and the Department of Public Enterprises of South Africa.

He said the South African state transport entity would be supplying its counterpart in Ghana with 22 coaches, six locomotives for freight, two locomotives and two power vans with kitchen to render services to passengers.

According to Mr Ayisi Boateng, a team from Transnet is expected to visit Ghana in the coming weeks to inspect some of the rail tracks in Ghana.

Also, about 20 Ghanaian railway workers will visit South Africa for training, the High Commissioner said.

This, is to help revamp the railway company in Ghana and that the partnership between the two countries would extend to the maintenance of Ghana’s railway lines as well, he added.
