Somali military court has sentenced two foreigners to 15 years in prison each, having been found guilty of recruiting foreign nationals for the extremist group al-Shabab in Somalia.

According to Radio Mogadishu, Hassan Ali Nur Shute, head of the Military Court in Mogadishu, Darren Anthony Byrness, a 44-year-old British man, and Ahmed Mustaqim Bin Abdulhamid, a 34-year-old Malaysian, will serve 15 years in prison each.

Byrness, who arrived in Somalia in 2010, collaborated with various al-Shabab officials in Somalia to stage terror actions in the nation as well as plan terror strikes in France, according to the court.

Abdulhamid, who joined the terror group in 2009, was also active in an insurgency in Galgaduud state against Ahlu Sunna Waljama’a (ASWJ), a moderate Islamic organisation, according to Shute.

The two foreigners involved in the terror cell’s planning and intelligence gathering denied assisting the terror organisation in Somalia.

The two foreigners were apprehended by Puntland security personnel in 2019 while attempting to cross into Yemen, according to Shute, and were then taken to Mogadishu to face terrorism accusations.
