The site remains grassland a year after singer Akon laid the first stone of the $6 billion futuristic city he promised to build for his home Senegal.

A little plaque promoting the megaproject has fallen off the stone, which rests at the bottom of a dirt track in a field.

The construction of “Akon City,” an ultramodern twisting skyscraper project, was supposed to start near the Atlantic Ocean village of Mbodiene.

However, construction work has yet to begin, leaving neighbors who were hoping for jobs to be concerned about the project’s future.

“There were a lot of words and promises when they placed the foundation stone,” said Jules Thiamane, a 35-year-old local who works in the tourism business.

Recall that, Akon, a Senegalese-American singer-songwriter best known for R&B singles like “Smack That,” will open his own city in September 2020, amid much hoopla and international media attention.

He noted at the time that the city’s alien appearance was partly inspired by Wakanda, the fictitious African metropolis featured in the Marvel film and comic series “Black Panther.”

Akon City’s planners also claim that it will be a “beacon of innovation and human development” that will help Senegal’s economy.

There will be a stadium, a casino, luxury high-rise apartment complexes, and a school district.
