No fewer than 80,000 farmers in nine states affected by security crises have received seeds from the International Committee of the Red Cross to aid cultivation in the rainy season.

The states are; Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, Bauchi, Plateau, Kaduna, Nassarawa, Benue and Cross River.

The Red Cross said in a release on Friday that some of the farmers were also given undisclosed cash sums to buy farming tools and other agricultural inputs.

The seeds in maize, millet, rice, cowpea, hibiscus, sesame and vegetable seeds were given to the farmers free of charge by the Red Cross for the 2019 planting season to support their families and their communities in recovering from the security crises.

The Head of the ICRC Operations in Adamawa State, Jane Clarke, said, “The distributions began in March and were carried out with the help of the Nigerian Red Cross Society.

Humanitarian figures indicate that more than 7.1 million people in Nigeria need life-saving assistance.
