In a pivotal move to enhance transparency and credibility in the upcoming local government elections, the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has launched an electronic voter verification system.
The Commission’s Chairman, Hon. Plangji Daniel Cishak, made this announcement during a Stakeholders’ Engagement event held on Thursday in Jos. He emphasized that this innovative system, created entirely by the Commission’s ICT team, is set to transform the electoral process by ensuring that only eligible voters participate in the elections scheduled for October 9, 2024.
During his address, Hon. Cishak underscored the importance of this new technology, marking a historic milestone as it will be the first implementation of electronic voter verification in Plateau State elections.
He stated, “This is a landmark achievement not only for PLSIEC but for electoral processes in Plateau State as a whole. We have developed a state-of-the-art Voter Verification Software that will ensure that only eligible voters can cast their ballots, thereby reducing the incidence of electoral fraud and protecting the integrity of the electoral process.”
“We want the people of Plateau State to understand that this is not just about deploying software; it is about making a statement that we are prepared to do things differently. Our intention is to ensure that every vote truly counts, and that the people’s will is accurately reflected in the outcome of the elections.”
To facilitate the successful implementation of the new system, the Commission has initiated several training programs for its staff and key stakeholders. Reflecting on these preparations, the Chairman mentioned that training sessions conducted by the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) have equipped electoral officers and personnel with the necessary skills to effectively manage the new system.
He added, “We understand that technology alone cannot guarantee success. This is why we have prioritized capacity building for all our staff members. Every official involved in the election is being trained on the use of the software and other aspects of the process. We want to bridge any gaps and ensure everyone is aligned with our vision for a credible and seamless election.”
Addressing potential concerns about security and logistics, Hon. Cishak revealed the establishment of the Plateau State Advisory Consultative Committee on Election Security (PLACCES), which is focused on safeguarding both voters and electoral officers.
He stated, “Security is paramount, and we have put measures in place to protect both the integrity of the election and the safety of everyone involved. We echo the words of former President Goodluck Jonathan, who once reminded us that ‘no ambition is worth the blood of any man.’ We are committed to ensuring that these elections are conducted peacefully, and that Plateau State sets a positive example for other states to follow.”
Furthermore, the Chairman reiterated the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders, urging political parties, civil society organizations, traditional rulers, and the media to work with the Commission to achieve a transparent and credible electoral process.
“This election is more than just a date on the calendar; it is an opportunity for the people of Plateau State to have their voices heard. We are ready to work with everyone to ensure that this process is not just free and fair, but a true reflection of the people’s will,” he emphasized.
In his remarks, Governor Caleb Mutfwang, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Samuel Jatau, assured stakeholders of the administration’s dedication to a credible and non-interfering electoral process.
He affirmed, “This government is committed to ensuring that this election is one we can all be proud of. We want to see the right people declared winners in an election that is free, fair, and admired by all citizens of Plateau State.” He also encouraged all political parties to embrace the new measures introduced by PLASIEC and to prepare for the election with an open mind.
