Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Edo State, Mr Asue Ighodalo, has promised to transform Uhunmwode Local Government Area of the state into a food basket community if elected.
Ighodalo made the promise on Tuesday while addressing party members and supporters at Ehor.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the members and supporters were drawn from Ehor, Uhi, Igieduma, and Irhue wards of the area.
Speaking in pidgin English, Ighodalo said Uhunmwode was blessed with a huge expanse of very fertile land suitable for food, fruits, and cash crops in commercial quantities.
“Ehor is the capital of fruits in Nigeria. We are going to bring a company to Ehor that will engage in fruit processing for the people.
“Uhonmwode is very key to our developmental plan because of its rich natural endowments and inherent potential in agriculture.
“Let me assure you that in line with our developmental plan, we will turn this place into the fruit basket of the state.
“We want to work for our people and our people must have a stake in the economy. We should all get ready for investors in the state,” he said.
Meanwhile, the PDP deputy governorship candidate, Osarodion Ogie, maintained that he and Ighodalo desired to be in government to improve the lives of people in Edo.
“Whatever we are going to do to improve your lives, we will do. The road between Ihue and Urhue will be completed.
“You cannot spend all your time on the farm and will not see the road to evacuate your produce,” he said.
NAN reports that the campaign train received members of the Labour Party and All Progressives Congress who moved to the PDP.
