Paris Olympics: NOC, Sports Ministry unveil 84 athletes

The Federal Ministry of Sports Development and the Nigeria Olympics Committee (NOC) have jointly unveiled a list of 84 athletes to represent the country at the upcoming Paris Olympics.

The Paris 2024 Olympics is scheduled to kick off on Friday and end on Aug. 11.

Tony Nezianya, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of NOC, in a statement on Thursday in Lagos said the athletes would compete in 12 sports at the global sports fiesta.

“Notably, the contingent is largely comprised of female athletes, with a significant presence in the football and basketball teams.

“The team will also be participating in events such as athletics, badminton, boxing, canoeing, cycling, taekwondo, table tennis, wrestling, weightlifting and swimming,” he added.

Nezianya also disclosed that the athletes have started moving into the Olympic Games Village in Paris from their training base in Germany.

“This is with the exception of the national female football team, the Super Falcons, who have relocated to Bordeaux for their event being held in cities outside Paris.”

The NOC PRO explained that the athletes included those for female basketball (13), athletics (35), female football (22), table tennis (4), wrestling (6), swimming (2), taekwondo (1) and badminton (1).

The rest are for canoeing (2), cycling (1), boxing (2) and weightlifting (2).
