Over 300 Tanzanians will climb Africa’s tallest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, to celebrate the nation’s 60th Independence Anniversary on December 9 according to a minister announced on Sunday.

Mount Kilimanjaro, one of Tanzania’s most popular tourist sites, is at 5,895 meters above sea level and attracts over 50,000 trekkers from across the world each year.

According to Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Damas Ndumbaro, 121 climbers have already signed up for the historic expedition dubbed “The Kilimanjaro Climb Campaign.” Tanzania obtained independence from the United Kingdom on December 9, 1961.

Ndumbaro told a press conference in Tanzania’s safari capital Arusha that the climb has been jointly organized by the government and a private tour operator called Zara Tours based in Moshi, at the foot of the mountain.
