A former governor of Edo state, South-South Nigeria, Adams Oshiomhole, has formally declared his intention to contest for the chairmanship position of the country’s governing All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to Premium Times, Comrade Oshiomhole, a one-time President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), made the declaration in Abuja on Thursday, May 10.

Another online publication, NAIJ.com has predicted that Oshiomhole is expected to be the main challenger to the incumbent chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, if the latter decides to seek re-election.

Both men are from Edo state and are former governors of the state.

It was gathered that a meeting by APC state chairpersons and leaders in the south-south ended in acrimony due to the ambition of both men. Oshiomhole, however, enjoys the support of President Muhammadu Buhari. He is also believed to enjoy the support of a leader of the APC, Bola Tinubu, thus putting him in good stead to emerge chairman.

NAIJ.com had previously reported that President Muhammadu Buhari met with the APC governors on Tuesday, April 24, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja behind closed doors between 8:30pm to 11pm.

Presidency sources told State House correspondents that the president used the opportunity to endorse former governor of Edo state, Adams Oshiomhole, for the chairmanship of the party.
