The Chairman, Cross River Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Archibong Bassey has commended women group for their initiative of skills acquisition for women and potential mothers in the state.
Archibong gave the commendation when the leadership of a revered women organisation under the aegis of African Mothers, paid a courtesy visit to her office at Ernest Etim Bassey Press Centre in Calabar, Wednesday.
The NUJ Chairperson urged the group to stay committed in the drive to improve on the livelihoods of women in the state through their initiative of giving them new skills to add value to their living conditions.
Archibong, who charge the leadership of the women organisation to uphold the virtues of integrity in elevating the status of women in the society, assured that the media would go all length to give the widest publicity to all their activities
Earlier, State Coordinator of the group, Mrs Margaret Mkpanam expressed appreciation for the opens doors of the media that gave her team a huge reception
Mkpanam intimated that they were at the Press Centre to congratulate their host for having emerged as the first female Chairman of NUJ in the state, describing the feat as victory for the women.
The group assured of changing the narrative of women as back benchers in the society which has over time resulted in the girl child dreaming their future away without skills to fall back on.
The coordinator, further, revealed that the group has set the machinery in motion to build capacity of 200 women in the 18 Local Government Areas of the state on soap production, packaging and distribution.
She said that this development would carry the women away from idleness and the distractions of watching big brother.
The women group which is licenced to export their products, sought the support of the media to deliver their mandate of liberating women in the state from the shackles of poverty.
