Nigerian Army denies looting during protest, says troops intercepted hoodlums in Kano

The Nigerian Army (NA) has denied allegations that its troops participated in looting during the protests in Kano on Thursday, August 1, 2024.

In a statement released on Friday by the Army’s spokesman, Major Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, said that a viral video circulating on social media, which appears to show soldiers looting, is misconceived.

Maj. Gen. Nwachukwu said the troops from 3 Brigade NA responded to a distress call about an attack on Barakat Stores in Kano metropolis. The soldiers intervened and prevented the hoodlums from looting the store.

He said that the troops recovered some of the looted items and were conveying them back to the store when they received another distress call about a planned attack on the Kano State Government House.

He explained that the troops immediately diverted to respond to the second distress call, which was more urgent. It was during this response that the video was shot.

The Army’s spokesman clarified that the troops were not overly concerned about some hoodlums stealing from their truck while in motion because their priority was to prevent the attack on the Government House.

The recovered items, including gallons of cooking oil, were later returned to the store and handed over to the rightful owner. The management of Barakat stores has acknowledged and appreciated the effort of the troops in a letter.

The NA commended its troops for their swift effort and professional conduct in maintaining law and order and preventing wanton looting. The statement urged the public to be cautious of misinformation and verify facts before drawing conclusions.

The NA appreciated the cooperation and support of law-abiding members of the public in ensuring peace and safety during this critical moment.
