President Muhammadu Buhari has stated that his government is prepared to arrest and prosecute anyone who incites violence by their words or deeds.
He stated that his government’s commitment to a peaceful, united, and united Nigeria was unshakeable.
In a countrywide broadcast on Friday in Abuja to commemorate Nigeria’s 61st Independence Anniversary, the Nigerian leader pledged to continue to protect the welfare and security of all citizens in accordance with the country’s constitution.
The president urged all citizens to avoid using violence in resolving grievances or socio-political misunderstandings, claiming that such issues might be resolved peacefully.
“In accordance with Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the security and wellbeing of Nigerians remain the primary focus of our government’s programs and undertakings.
“As a result, as a government, we stand ready to arrest and prosecute anyone who uses words or actions to incite violence. Our commitment to a peaceful, united, and united Nigeria is strong.
“However, we do not wish to fight for peace. We can always resolve our differences in a peaceful manner without pouring blood.
“I will, therefore, use this particular day to implore all Nigerians to embrace peace and dialogue on this remarkable day that symbolizes our wonderful nation’s unity and oneness.
“Words plant the seeds of violence in the minds of people. The rash words of a few have resulted in the deaths of many innocent people and the ruin of property.
“Such unfiltered and unverified lies and hate rants by a few wicked people must come to an end,” he said.
President Buhari also urged journalists and pundits to move away from simply publishing reckless utterances and instead investigate the truth behind such claims and deliver the facts to the public.
“We must all speak out against the lies that are being spread.
“At this point, I’d like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the large number of traditional, religious, and community leaders, as well as other well-intentioned Nigerians, who are openly spreading the message of peaceful coexistence and conflict resolution through dialogue in their respective communities through their various fora.
“Nigeria belongs to us all. Its cohesiveness cannot be compromised. And it can only succeed in the end if we all work together toward a common objective of peace and prosperity for our country,” he remarked.
He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to continue working on dialogue-based solutions to legitimate issues.
