Ahead of next year’s general elections in Nigeria, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has registered 14 million new voters across the country.

Chairman of the commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who made this known in Abuja on Thursday, explained that the registration was carried out within 16 months under the continuous voter registration (CVR) exercise.

According to him, the new figure brings the total number of eligible voters in the country to 84 million.

Yakubu made the disclosure at a meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioners (REC), in the nationa’s capital.

The registration exercise ended last Friday countrywide.

The forthcoming general elections, scheduled to hold in the first quarter of 2019, will afford the 84 million voters the opportunity of electing their leaders at the state and federal levels, including the president.
