Ms Augusta Maita, the General-Director of INGC, said this when speaking to partners during a meeting on humanitarian assistance in Maputo.
Maita said that out of the 814,000 people affected by food insecurity, only 378,000 had benefited from assistance, and the money was needed to cover the rest of the population for the coming three months.
“We have a serious deficit which means thousands of people are still in need of assistance.
“This is a situation that concerns us a lot. We are referring to people from the provinces of Gaza, Inhambane, Sofala and Cabo Delgado,’’ said Maita.
The director revealed that heavy rainfall weather had claimed 50 lives nationwide since the rainy season began in October 2018.
He said that the institute had been battling against the prolonged droughts that had affected more than 45,000 food producers and in an area of more than 80,243 hectares of different crops.
Provinces of Gaza and Maputo were among the most severely affected areas. (Xinhua/NAN)
