The former Chairman of the Governing Board of TETFUND and Mattawali of Borno, Alhaji Kashim Ibrahim Imam, has made a passionate appeal to wealthy individuals and corporate organizations to provide emergency support to the recent flood victims in Maiduguri.
The devastating flood has caused immense suffering and hardships, and Imam has spent three days cooking and distributing food and water to over 200,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs).
Alhaji Imam expressed his empathy for the victims, saying, “We are saddened by the magnitude of destruction caused by the flood in Maiduguri and its environs. The carnage, the loss of lives, the loss of properties, and the unimaginable displacement are heart-wrenching.”
The former Chairman has already distributed 200,000 cooked food packs, with an average of 10,000 packs daily. He emphasized the dire situation, stating, “Most people at night manage to escape with the clothes they were wearing; these people have practically lost everything. I have some of them with me.”
“The things (floods) are much more devastated and the fact that across several communities the flood has wrecked havoc. People are calling me from Southern Borno that their rice was at the point of harvest and then the flood came and they lost everything,” Imam said.
The distribution exercise is expected to last for the next two to three weeks, after which the situation is expected to normalize. Additionally, Imam plans to distribute 7,200 bags of rice as part of medium-term interventions to support those impacted by the flood.
