By Theodore Jones –

Libya’s former Interior Minister, Fathi Bashagha, on Thursday, registered as a presidential contender for a December election that is still in doubt due to rules disagreements.

Bashagha was the powerful interior minister in the internationally recognized Government of National Accord (GNA), which controlled in western parts until March, when it was replaced by a new unity government.

He joins a list of potential contenders that includes Muammar al-son Gaddafi’s Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, Khalifa Haftar, the eastern military commander, and Aguila Saleh, the eastern-based parliament speaker.

On December 24, a United Nations-backed peace process calls for presidential and parliamentary elections, but there is no universal consensus on the legal foundation for the poll.

Rival factions and political bodies have clashed about who should be permitted to run, the role of the directly elected president in the future, and the voting schedule.

Analysts believe that whether or not the elections take place, the debates surrounding them would undermine the peace effort.
