Kobbie Mainoo and Sir Jim Ratcliffe in agreement over ‘dream’ midfield partner for Man Utd star

Kobbie Mainoo named a Manchester United legend as his dream midfield partner.

Mainoo’s stunning emergence at Man United this season has seen him become one of Erik ten Hag’s most important players.

He’s shone in the middle of the park and scored his first professional goal at Old Trafford in his side’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

In doing so, fans on social media spotted a spooky detail in the teenage sensation’s spectacular strike last weekend.

Mainoo, who made an apology in his post-match interview, has often been paired with Casemiro in midfield and during a fan Q&A, he was asked to pick a former Man United player he would have loved to have played alongside.

And the 18-year-old opted for Paul Scholes, who enjoyed a glittering career at Man United, winning 11 Premier League titles during his legendary career.

Mainoo said: “I’d say Paul Scholes. Although there might not be a lot defending between the two of us.

“But, yeah, Scholes. Scholes – definitely.”

Explaining his pick, he added: “[Because of] everything. His passing, his movement, the way he could finish. His intelligence. Yes, he was a great player.”

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who had his 25 per cent purchase in the club approved by the Premier League this year, sided with Mainoo when asked to pick one player he would bring back in their prime to play in the current team.

“I think I’d bring Paul Scholes,” he replied, without hesitation.

Ratcliffe believes Man United are missing a player like Scholes in Ten Hag’s midfield.

“That’s the player that they are sort of most missing,” he added. “They’ve got a couple of players who are not Roy Keane but – Casemiro and [Kobbie] Mainoo – they’re sort of quite defensive midfielders, you know?

“But they don’t have a Paul Scholes or an [Andreas] Iniesta.”

What do you think?
