Kenya, Estonia agree to uphold multilateralism

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and Estonian Prime Minister Kersti Kaljulaid, who is visiting Kenya, have committed to work together to safeguard multilateralism on the international stage.

The two leaders stated the multilateralism system ensures fairness and justice on the world arena, according to a statement released by the Kenyan presidency on Friday, and pledged to use the two nations’ non-permanent membership on the UN Security Council to cooperatively advance multilateralism.

“We are actually on the UN Security Council together, and we all understand why small countries are chosen to the Security Council.

“This is because we adhere to international rules and regulations,” Kaljulaid was quoted as saying on Thursday evening in Nairobi, during a cocktail party held in her honor by Kenyatta.

The two agreed to pursue common goals such as regional and global peace, climate change, and the gender agenda.

Kaljulaid said she had been impressed by Kenya’s use of digital technologies in public service delivery, and advised Nairobi to consider tightening its cyber security protocols to ensure that the systems are tamper-proof.

Estonia will partner with Kenya in pushing for global issues that affect small countries, especially climate change, cyber security, and peace, she said.

The Estonian leader said her country is determined to forge a strong technology partnership with Kenya that will see the two countries share expertise in the area.
