Kanuri Global Summit: Zulum, Buni, others attend Grand Durbar in Borno


Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, Borno Deputy Governor, Umar Kadufur and other dignitaries at the Kanuri Global Summit

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum and his Yobe State counterpart, Governor Mai Mala Buni on Sunday, attended a grand durbar procession organized by Borno State Emirate Council in collaboration with the Borno State Government and North East Development Commission (NEDC) to commemorating a 3-day Kanem Borno International Summit held in Maiduguri, Borno state capital.

The Kanuri Global Summit which brought together prominent leaders from across several countries including Chad, Niger, Sudan, Ghana, Ethiopia, Mali, Gabon, Togo, Benin Cameroon, Libya, Benin and Central African Republic among other nations started on Friday, 15th February and ended on Sunday, 17th February 2024 .

It also featured a special prayer session on Friday at the shehu’s palace central Mosque Maiduguri in the afternoon and a traditional horse riding called (Garlaf) in the evening while on Saturday, the Global summit featured a Kanem Borno Dynasty Cultural Colloquium three different paper presentations from distinguished scholars and on Sunday.

The summit closed with a grand Durba, horse riding which was declared open by His Eminence, Alh. Abubakar Umar Ibn Garbai Al Amin El Kanemi by riding a horse himself.

It will be recalled that Kanem Borno Empire is one of the most respected and powerful kingdoms before the advent of western colonialism.

It has survived over one thousand years and has occupied a coveted place in the world of civilization as several Islamic scholars from different countries were among those who attended the prayer session which took place at Shehu of Borno’s palace mosque on Friday.

The summit also provided a platform for showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Kanem Borno region, with vibrant displays of traditional music, dances, songs and crafts among others.

Other dignitaries that attended the grand Durba include the Borno Deputy Governor, Umar Usman Kadafur, the Minister of Art, Culture and Creative Economy, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, former ministers, Senators, House of Representatives members from Borno state, Deputy National Chairman of the APC (North), Ali Bukar Dalori, and the former Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba Alkali among others numerous to mention.

Traditional rulers from Yobe, Bauchi, Nasarawa and Sultan of N’Djmena joined the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Umar Garbai El kanemi, who led other Emirs from Borno State to attended the grand Durba.
