Eight people have been rescued and an unknown number of people remain trapped as a three-story building collapsed in northwest Nigeria’s Kano state on Tuesday.

Nuraddeen Abdullahi, National Emergency Management Agency coordinator in charge of Kano state, told Xinhua on the phone that a three-story building under construction in a popular market in the city of Kano, the state capital, collapsed on Tuesday afternoon, trapping an unknown number of people.

“So far, about eight persons have been rescued and taken to the hospital while search and rescue operations are still ongoing to rescue those trapped beneath the rubble,” Abdullahi said.

He said the building collapsed while additional stairs were added during ongoing construction
