Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) has slapped targeted sanctions on the leaders of Guinea’s and Mali’s military juntas, in an effort to force the nations’ quick restoration to democratic administration.

The decision was made at an extraordinary summit of the 15-member bloc’s chiefs of state and government on Thursday in Accra, Ghana’s capital.

The Ecowas Commission said in a statement that the measures, which include a travel ban and the freezing of financial assets, are intended at members of the juntas and their family members.

The sanctions against all members of Guinea’s National Committee for Reconciliation and Development (CNRD) junta take effect immediately.

The sanctions against all members of the National Committee of Reconciliation and Development (CNRD) junta in Guinea, as well as their family members, take effect immediately. In Mali, it will only effect those who have been identified as taking part in a deliberate attempt to halt the transition process.

The meeting was attended by chiefs of state from nine nations, including the presidents of Sierra Leone, Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea Bissau, and Senegal. Nigeria’s Vice President, Yemi Osinnajo, represented the regional superpower.

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Ghana’s president and current chairman of the group, presided over the meeting.
