Defection prelude: Akpabio visits President Buhari in London

By DAVID IORJA, Abuja

Former governor of Akwa Ibom State, South-South Nigeria and Senate Minority leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, held a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari in London on Sunday.

The meeting comes amidst strong indications that Akpabio would dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next couple of days.

Confirming the meeting between the President and Akpabio in London, the Head of Digital Communication in the Presidency, Tolu Ogunlesi, said on his Tweeter handle, @toluogunlesi: “Chief Godswill Obot Akpabio, Senator representing Akwa Ibom North West District, and Senate Minority Leader, today in London met with PMB.”

He attached photographs of the meeting between the two leaders.

Although details of what transpired during the London meeting could not be immediately ascertained, Senator Akpabio was believed to have pledged his support for the re-election of President Buhari, who is currently on a 10-day vacation in the United Kingdom.

Just last week, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Prosecution, Okoi Obono-Obla, dropped the hint that Senator Akpabio, who is currently embroiled in a cold war with the man he installed as governor of Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Emmanuel Udom, was set to defect to the APC any moment soon.

In the aftermath of the recent mass defection that hit the APC in the National Assembly, it has become unclear whether indeed Akpabio still has control as minority leader, with the swelling of the ranks of  PDP senators in the upper chamber.
