Death toll from a terrorist attack in northern Burkina Faso on Sunday has risen from 20 to 32, including 28 troops, according to a government spokesman.

“As of 4 p.m. local time, the provisional toll remained at 28 fallen military and 4 civilians dead,” said government spokesman Ousseni Tamboura in a statement.

Gunmen attacked a gendarmerie post in Inata, Soum province, Burkina Faso’s northern Sahel area, on Sunday.

According to the press release, another attack was thwarted the same day in Soum’s Kelbo commune.

In addition, a 72-hour national mourning period was designated in remembrance of the deaths from Tuesday to Thursday, according to the press statement.

Since 2015, Burkina Faso has been facing a worsening security situation with terrorist attacks that claimed the lives of more than 1,000 people and displaced over 1 million others.
