COVID Omicron Variant- Ban on African countries unfair, discriminatory — Adesina

By Mbafan Ade –

President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, said travel ban on some African countries due to Omicron, the new COVID-19 variation, is “extremely unjust, non-scientific, and discriminatory.”

Adesina, who made this known via his verified Twitter handle encouraged Western countries to lift their travel bans on African nations.

He wondered why a travel ban had not been imposed on non-African countries where Omicron had been discovered.

” Why single out African countries? It is unjust, nonscientific, and discriminatory to single out African countries.

“Global immunizations and travel apartheid against Africa imperil lives and harm economies, lives, jobs, and livelihoods as a result of a pandemic that Africa did not cause.”

“Apartheid must come to an end. “Respect Africa,” stated Adesina.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that following the reports of the newly detected coronavirus variant in South Africa, many developed countries have been shutting their doors against African countries with no records of the variant.

African leaders had been pushing back on the travel bans imposed by the Western nations.

They contended that the result of South Africa’s openness in sharing news of the variant had led to what they see as punitive measures.

The variant which was detected last week in Botswana had since then been found in countries across the globe from Scotland to Canada.
