China slams US for claiming military base in Kenya

China has refuted US reports that it is aiming to create a military facility in Kenya as part of a plan to expand its influence in Africa.

In its yearly report to Congress on China’s military, the US Department of Defense, also known as the Pentagon, claimed that Beijing was seeking military logistics bases in a dozen African countries, including Kenya and Tanzania.

The Chinese Embassy in Nairobi, on the other hand, dismissed the Pentagon report as propaganda and urged the US to abandon its “Cold War mentality” on Friday.

Following World War II, the Cold War was a period of geopolitical tension between the United States and the former Soviet Union, as well as their respective allies.

Actual military fighting was confined to proxy conflicts in developing countries like as Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan, and the struggle remained essentially cold.

The Chinese Embassy in Nairobi stated, “The Chinese MFA (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) has advised them to stop releasing reckless reports year after year, and to reject the antiquated cold-war mentality and zero-sum game approach.”

“Their latest report is just the same as the previous fact-neglecting and bias-brimming.”

Kenya, a critical US ally in the East Africa region, is under pressure from Washington to resist the push for stronger military and economic ties with China, which is seeking greater influence in the region.

Nairobi and Washington, alongside its former colonial master Britain, have strong military engagements.
