Centre calls for end to discrimination against obstetric fistula patients in Taraba

The ECWA Evangel VVF Centre has called for an end to the discrimination and stigmatization of individuals suffering from obstetric fistula in Taraba State and across Nigeria.

The Center made the appeal while marking the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula (IDEOF), which has the theme; ‘Act Now to End Fistula by 2030.’ in Jalingo, Taraba State.

It said there was an urgent need for people and institutions to desist from stigmatizing those with the condition in society.

The Project Coordinator, Comprehensive and Inclusive Health Project, Professor Sunday Lengmang, said rather than discriminating against obstetric fistula patients, affected individuals must be supported to thrive in society.

Lengmang, who was represented by the Project Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Gwong Ayuba, noted that the condition is treatable.

While highlighting the high prevalence of fistula in the country’s Northeast geopolitical zone, Lengmang pointed to poverty as a significant contributing factor to the ailment in the region.

“Poverty is often the leading cause of obstetric fistula. Many women and girls, especially in the northeast, suffer from this condition and remain untreated due to financial constraints,” he stated.

“Most women with this condition cannot access care due to financial issues, hence our decision to bring the services to their doorsteps,” he added.
