Nigerian Grammy award-winning artiste Burna Boy is making history as his new album, ‘Love, Damini’ becomes the highest charting African album on US iTunes with a peak of #2 in less than 2 hours.
The album is the superstar’s 6th studio album following its release in the early hours of Friday, 8 July.
The singer whose real name is Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, announced the project back in April and later confirmed his plans to release it on 2 July, in celebration of his 31st birthday.
After the original drop date came and went, Burna told fans the album would arrive a week late.
The African Giant gave fans an impressive preview of the 19-track album on Friday, 13 May, with his released banger ‘Last Last’.
‘Last Last’ peaked at number one position of the top 100 songs in Nigeria and number 71 on the UK top 100 of Apple Music while also charting in different countries.
The song ‘Last Last’ also hit a milestone on other streaming platforms, garnering 677K streams on Spotify, which makes it the most-streamed Nigerian song in one day.
The rest of the 19-track album features collaborations with Ed Sheeran (“For My Hand”), J Hus (“Cloak Y Dagger”), Popcaan (“Toni-Ann Singh”), Blxst and Kehlani (“Solid”), J. Balvin (“Rollercoaster”), Khalid (“Wild Dreams”), Victony (“Different Size”), and Ladysmith Black Mambazo, who appear on the album’s opener (“Glory”) and closer (“Love, Damani”).
Burna spoke about the album during a May interview with Billboard, when he explained the inspiration behind its title and its overall theme.
“That’s how I like to sign all my letters, because I didn’t know the proper [signoff].
It’s a bit personal [because] it’s bringing you into my head on my birthday — when you turn 31 and ain’t got no kids, everything is going good and bad at the same time.
You reflect and then you get as lit as possible. Then you sleep and wake up and reflect again. I’m reflecting on everything — what I’m doing and what’s happening where I’m from. Where I’m from is a part of where I’m going.”
Love, Damini is available to stream now on Apple Music and Spotify.
The music star will support the album with a summer tour, which kicks off July 17 in Barbados, followed by stops in Chicago, Houston, and Atlanta.
