The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has reaffirmed its commitment to fulfilling its mandate in supporting Somalia’s path to peace and stability.

Mohammed El-Amine Souef, special representative of the African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson for Somalia and head of ATMIS, said the AU mission will work closely with partners to secure Somalia, which has been battling the al-Shabab insurgency.

“On behalf of the ATMIS staff, military, police, and civilians, I reiterate our commitment to work closely with you to support the plans and activities of the government and people of Somalia,” Souef said in a statement issued in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Sunday evening.

The AU envoy, who spoke when he hosted foreign diplomats accredited to Somalia, representatives of United Nations agencies, and officials of the Somali government, pledged to work with all partners to support efforts toward the reconstruction and development of Somalia for the benefit of the Somali people.

“I pledge my unreserved support and commitment to work closely with you all as we continue to support the restoration of peace and stability in Somalia,” Souef said.
