The issue of illegal migration have been on the lips of many in recent time. The past week has witnessed nearly 1,600 illegal migrants rescued off the Libyan coast and returned to Libya as mentioned by the International Organization for Migration said Monday.

“In the period of June 13 – 19, 1,594 migrants were rescued/intercepted at sea and returned to Libya,” the organiation said.

In 2021, 14,388 illegal migrants, including women and children, were rescued, while 194 died and 492 went missing off the Libyan coast on the Central Mediterranean route, according to the organisaation.

Since Muammar Gaddafi’s assassination in 2011, Libya has been plagued by insecurity and chaos, making it a popular destination for illegal migrants seeking to cross the Mediterranean Sea to European coastlines.

Despite repeated international requests to dismantle the institutions, rescued migrants wind up in congested reception centers across Libya.
