Ex-South African President Jacob Zuma bags to 15 months imprisonment

By Kwanta Douglas –

Jacob Zuma was sentenced after the Constitutional Court judged him guilty of contempt for refusing to attend a corruption investigation when he was president.

Jacob Zuma’s presidency, which ended in 2018, was marred by several charges of graft. Businessmen have been accused of collaborating with politicians to sway policy decisions.

The former president testified once at the investigation into what has come to be known as “state capture,” but then declined to testify again.

The Constitutional Court was requested to intervene by the inquiry, which was led by Justice Raymond Zondo.

It’s uncertain whether Mr Zuma will be detained immediately.

Mr Zuma pleaded not guilty last month in a corruption trial involving a $5 billion (£3 billion) arms sale from the 1990s.
