At least twenty persons perished in South Sudan’s Warrap State as a result of persistent severe floods.
Victor Wek Gogrial West County Commissioner told The EastAfrican on Friday that the majority of those slaughtered were children and women.
“Since the rains began in July, these deaths have been reported. And drowning is the leading cause of death. As you are well aware, Gogrial is swampy, and rains exacerbate the situation.
“As I talk to you now, the State Relief and Rehabilitation Commission has estimated that at least 17,500 individuals have been displaced.” Wek told the story.
“What is needed right now is sheltering materials to help flood victims immediately, then food and non-food goods will play a larger part in aiding those who may hunger, which is the majority,” Wek said.
Last month, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) reported that flash floods and waves of intercommunal conflicts had displaced at least 380,000 people from six states in South Sudan.
Thousands of people were uprooted and numerous homes were destroyed in South Sudan last year due to severe rains and flash floods. The states of Jonglei, Pibor, Upper Nile, Unity, Western, and Eastern Equatoria were the hardest hit.
